Description

Watercolour and ink on paper, 11"x14". January 2018.

This is for the Winter Contest going on at :iconartnouveau: (you can read about it here: Winter Contest (8 contestants)).

For those of you who aren't familiar with it, this is the villain from C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia. This picture was inspired from the first two books of the series, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Magician's Nephew. She rules the imaginary land of Narnia with an icy fist, using her evil magical powers to make it winter all the time and turning rebels into stone statues. In this picture, the Witch is of course in the center panel. Her right-hand henchman is on the right, holding the reigns of one of the reindeer that pull her sledge through the woods of Narnia as she goes about spreading terror. In the left panel is poor Mr. Tumnus, a faun who decided to rebel against her by not allowing her to capture little Lucy when she comes to visit Narnia (he's stone now). Behind him you can see the lamppost that grows at the edge of Narnia (you'd have to read the first book of the series, The Magician's Nephew to understand this one better). In the top panel is the landscape of Narnia featuring the two hills that she uses as a landmark to tell Edmund where she lives.

True to the art nouveau traditions, the plants pictured serve as symbols as well: the spruce boughs at Mr. Tumnus' hooves represent hope in adversity; the flower in the top, center circle is enchanter's nightshade for sorcery and witchcraft; the flowers in the medallion around Jadis' head are scarlet auricula for pride; the brambles in front of her servant are barberry for short temper. The apples in the top two circles are nods to the previous book in the series (see The Magician's Nephew) where the Witch steals Aslan's silver apples to gain eternal youth and strength. She gets it, but it causes her to become even more evil and miserable than ever before with each passing day. As a sign of this cursed wish granted, her skin becomes "as white as salt".

The lines were all inked with Microliner pens and a black Prismacolor marker; colouring is watercolour, except for the reddish border line, which is Terracotta Red Prismacolor marker. The white of the snowflakes, highlights, etc. is white ink. The paper I did this on went a bit wavy, so the frame looks way more wonky than it is in real life. I will attempt to fix this in the next couple of days.

In the meantime, I'd love to hear what you think!
